Demand the Immediate Release of Billions in K-12 Funding

The Trump administration’s Education Department is blocking the distribution of nearly $7 billion in congressionally-approved k-12 program funding. Normally the Education Department grants state educational agencies access to federal funding by July 1, allowing states to fund critical summer programs and plan for the coming school year. This year, however, the Department has withheld funds without justification, leaving programs facing critical funding shortfalls and creating chaos for schools and families. Meanwhile, Office of Management and Budget director Russell Vought is threatening to claw back these congressionally-approved funds permanently.

Services affected by the funding impoundment include:

America’s children, families, and educators deserve better. Urge Congress and state attorneys general to demand the immediate release of these impounded and essential funds.

Script:

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [Your City].

I'm calling to urge [Senator Moreno/Husted /Representative Balderson] to act to secure the immediate release of the billions in K-12 school funding currently held hostage by the Education Department. Congress has already approved these federal funds, and blocking their disbursement is both unconstitutional and harmful to America's children.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Support OH HB 351:To establish the Ohio Task Force on Gun Violence.

According to the latest national statistics from the CDC, Ohio had the 11th highest overall gun homicide rate and the 8th highest gun suicide rate among Black people.  57% of the gun deaths in Ohio (1046 out of 1831) were from suicide.

HB 351, currently in the Public Safety committee, would  create the Ohio Task Force on Gun Violence.  Members of the Task Force would include the Governor, Attorney General, members of the Ohio House and Senate, Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, Director of the Commission on Minority Health, Director of Children and Youth, and members of the community who work to reduce gun violence.

The Task Force would study (1) The prevalence of gun violence within communities across the state; (2) Existing evidence-based programs that help reduce gun violence; (3) Best practices that are available to reduce gun violence; (4) Community revitalization efforts that can be implemented to prevent gun violence; (5) Criminal justice solutions to reduce gun violence in communities; (6) Social determinants of health that can be addressed to assist victims of gun violence.  The Task Force would prepare a report detailing its findings and recommendations and submit the report to the General Assembly. Upon submission of this report, the Task Force shall cease to exist.

Defend Medicare and Medicaid from Cuts in the "One Big Beautiful Bill" Act (UPDATED 6/26)

June 26, 2025: The Senate Parliamentarian has ruled that many key healthcare-related elements of Senate Republicans’ budget proposal, including prohibitions on Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming care, caps on provider taxes in Medicaid expansion states, and various provisions to exclude immigrants from Medicare and Medicaid coverage, violate the Byrd rule. Senate Republicans must now revise their bill or disregard decades of legislative precedent and override the parliamentarian’s Byrd rulings.

Senate Republicans are finalizing their own version of H.R. 1, aka the “One Big Beautiful Bill” Act, a bill focused on funding tax cuts for the wealthy by gutting critical programs like Medicaid and Medicare. Medicaid insures 72 million low-income and disabled Americans, while Medicare insures over 55 million people, primarily seniors.

Medicaid enjoys overwhelming bipartisan popularity. However, Senate Republicans’ budget proposal would make even deeper cuts to Medicaid than the House’s budget bill by introducing broader Medicaid work requirements and targeting Medicaid expansion by capping provider taxes used to fund Medicaid in states that expanded Medicaid.

While Republicans have repeatedly promised to not directly cut Medicare, their megabill will cause massive cuts to Medicare spending due to “PAYGO”, a budget rule that requires any reduction in revenue to be offset by cuts in other areas of the budget.

Cutting Medicaid and Medicare to make the rich even richer will devastate local economies and worsen health and wellbeing. Demand the Senate oppose proposed cuts to both programs.

Script:

Hello, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [YOUR CITY].

I’m calling to urge Senator [Moreno/Husted] to oppose the Medicaid cuts proposed in both the House and Senate budget reconciliation bills and remove all provisions that violate the Byrd rule. These cuts will cause millions of people on Medicaid to lose access to health care while making Medicaid more expensive and complex to administer, all to fund tax breaks for the rich. I am also concerned that the bill's impact on the deficit will trigger massive cuts to Medicare, a lifeline for America's seniors.

Oppose HB 233 and SB 153: To amend sections 303.12, 303.59, 307.94, 3501.01, 3501.38, 3501.381, 3501.39, 3503.13, 3503.14, 3503.15, 3503.151, 3503.152, 3503.153, 3503.16, 3503.19, 3503.20, 3503.21, 3503.33, 3505.181, 3505.182, 3505.183, 3505.20, 3509.02, 3509.03, 3509.04, 3509.05, 3509.051, 3509.06, 3509.07, 3509.08, 3509.09, 3511.02, 3511.04, 3511.05, 3511.09, 3511.11, 3511.14, 3513.07, 3513.261, 3517.01, 3517.12, 3519.02, 3519.05, 3519.16, 3599.12, and 3599.21 and to enact sections 3503.201, 3503.202, and 3511.052 of the Revised Code to require verification of an elector's citizenship before the elector may vote and to modify procedures regarding voter registration, voter roll maintenance, absent voting, and election petitions.

HB 233 and SB 153 would require Ohio voters to provide proof of citizenship such as an Ohio or other state driver’s license, state ID card, birth certificate, passport, certificate of naturalization, and proof of name change (marriage certificate or court order).  This requirement places an extra burden on elderly, lower income, and younger voters who may not have easy access to the required documents.  It also specifically creates an additional burden on married women to provide proof of name change.  These changes are aimed at addressing almost non-existent voter fraud in our state.

Script:

Hello, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [YOUR CITY].

I’m calling to urge [Representative Kevin MIller/Representative Thaddeus Claggett/Sentator Tim Schaffer] to oppose  HB 233 and SB 153 currently pending in the House and Sentate General Government committees.  These bills would create new proof of citizenship and proof of name change requirements that would disproportionately burden elderly, lower income, and younger Ohio voters as well as married women who have changed their names.  These changes are aimed at addressing almost non-existent voter fraud in our state and are unnecessary.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
